“Gótico Americano” versión La Catrina Bohemia '

...(English version below)

Y estar dispuesto a defenderse.

I would like to share some facts about this artwork:

  • In this painting our attention is focused on the couple, although curiously, the name (# GóticoAmericano) refers to the window between them in the neo-Gothic style.
  • Grant Wood painted this work in 1930 when the United States was entering an economic recession. With his work he makes a reference to traditional American values and the rural world. This farmer couple becomes an icon, reflecting hard work and an austere environment to survive this era. Although farmers and people at this time took it as an offense to their work and that of their ancestors, therefore it was not well received.
  • The two central figures are ambiguous in their relationship, whether they are husbands, father and daughter or just two inhabitants. Since the looks do not meet. And there seems to be no union.
  • The models that the painter used were his sister and his dentist. The woman is represented with puritanical and sober features. The man with a penetrating gaze, holds the fork in his hand, representing authority.
  • The fork is a fundamental element in the work carried out in the field, but the way in which the man holds it is threatening, symbolizing the protection of his own. And be willing to defend yourself.
